Spreader

Novel counterpart: L’untore

Spreader token

Ability

You might register as poisoned, evil, & as a Minion or Demon, even if poisoned or dead. If you are executed, another living good player might become the Spreader.

Al primo avviso di chi si fosse, al grido d’un ragazzo, si sonava a martello, s’accorreva.

The Spreader is less a person than a rumour made flesh. Disease and guilt seem to cling to them alike, and putting them to death may only cause suspicion to settle upon someone new.

How to Run

Whenever another ability checks the Spreader's poison state, alignment, character type or character, the Storyteller may make the Spreader register as:

  • poisoned;
  • evil;
  • a Minion;
  • a Demon;

as appropriate to that interaction.

The Storyteller may do this even while the Spreader is actually poisoned, and even while the Spreader is dead: the false registrations never malfunction from poison.

If the Spreader is executed, the Storyteller may choose another living good player. That player becomes the Spreader.

The original Spreader remains dead and ceases to be the Spreader once the character has moved.

Examples

The Cardinal learns how many living players are poisoned. The living Spreader is not actually poisoned, but the Storyteller may make them register as poisoned and include them in the result.

The Nun receives information about evil neighbours. The good Spreader may register as evil and affect the Nun's information.

An ability detects a Minion. The Spreader may register as a Minion for that interaction even though their actual character is the Spreader.

The Spreader is dead. An ability that can detect dead players may still receive information as though the Spreader were poisoned, evil, a Minion or a Demon.

The Plague sees the Spreader as registering poisoned. This alone does not mean that the Spreader actually became poisoned, so it does not automatically trigger the Plague's character-learning ability.

The Spreader is executed. The Storyteller chooses a living good Doctor. The Doctor becomes the Spreader and remains good.

Later, the new Spreader is executed. Their ability may pass the Spreader character to another living good player again.

Rules & Clarifications

  • Registration does not by itself change the Spreader's actual alignment, character or poison state.
  • The Spreader may still be actually good while registering as evil.
  • The Spreader may still actually be an Outsider while registering as a Minion or Demon.
  • The Spreader may register as poisoned without actually being poisoned.
  • Registers as poisoned does not mean becomes poisoned.
  • Therefore, merely registering as poisoned does not automatically trigger the Plague's When a player becomes poisoned, learn their character.
  • If the Spreader actually becomes poisoned, that is a genuine state change and may trigger abilities that care about a player becoming poisoned.
  • Registration may continue while the Spreader is dead.
  • Registration also continues while the Spreader is actually poisoned: unlike most abilities, this one does not malfunction from poison.
  • The Plague poisoning the Spreader is a genuine becomes poisoned event (the Plague learns their character), but it does not weaken the Spreader's false registrations.
  • When the Spreader is executed and another player becomes the Spreader, this is a genuine character change, not registration.
  • The new Spreader must be both living and good when selected.
  • Becoming the Spreader does not by itself change that player's alignment.
  • The previous Spreader remains dead and no longer has the Spreader character once it has moved.
