Corpse Bearer

Novel counterpart: I monatti

Corpse Bearer token

Ability

Each night*, learn every character whose ability caused a death today or tonight.

Si fecero, i monatti principalmente, arbitri d’ogni cosa.

The Corpse Bearer moves among the dead, learning which characters were responsible for the deaths of the day and the night.

How to Run

Each night except the first, check whether any character ability caused a player to die during the previous day or the current night.

If so, wake the Corpse Bearer and show them every character whose ability caused one of those deaths.

If no character ability caused a death today or tonight, do not wake the Corpse Bearer.

Examples

The Plague kills the Tailor during the night. The Corpse Bearer learns Plague.

The Lordling's marked player is nominated and dies during the day, and the Plague kills another player that night. The Corpse Bearer learns Lordling and Plague.

A player is executed normally during the day. The execution is not a character ability, so it alone gives the Corpse Bearer nothing.

The Kite kills the Cardinal. The Corpse Bearer learns Kite.

The Boatman swaps characters with a player, who then dies. The Corpse Bearer learns Boatman.

The Curate breaks Madness, and the Storyteller uses the Curate's ability to make a good player die that night. The Corpse Bearer learns Curate.

Three players die during the night, all to the Plague's ability. The only qualifying character is Plague, so the Corpse Bearer learns Plague alone.

The Plague poisons a healthy player instead of killing, nobody is executed by ability, and nothing else fires. The Corpse Bearer is not woken.

Rules & Clarifications

  • Today refers to the day immediately preceding the current night; tonight to the current night, before this ability resolves.
  • The Corpse Bearer learns characters, not players.
  • Each learned character must have had an ability that actually caused at least one player to die in the window.
  • The Corpse Bearer does not learn which death was caused by which character, nor how many players died.
  • A character is shown once, however many deaths its ability caused.
  • A normal execution does not count: the execution itself is not a character ability.
  • A death caused by a character ability during the day - such as the Lordling's marked player dying on nomination - does count.
  • Use the direct cause of death when attributing a chain.
  • Registration alone never makes a character responsible for a death.
  • If a character causes a death and then changes character, alignment, or dies before the Corpse Bearer wakes, the Corpse Bearer may still learn the character whose ability caused the death at the time it occurred.
  • The Corpse Bearer acts very late in the night, after all ordinary deaths have resolved.
  • If the Corpse Bearer is drunk or poisoned, the Storyteller may show an incorrect list: wrong characters, missing characters, or both.
